Helen Upperton and Jenny Ciochetti continued Canada’s mission for gold in the women’s race in the season-opening FIBT World Cup at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary on Friday.
The 28-year-old Upperton drove her Canada 1 sled into a tie for first after the opening run, and solidified her first gold medal ever on the Calgary track with a combined time of one minute 53.86 seconds. The Calgary native, who finished fourth at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games, drove to five, fourth-place finishes on the World Cup last season.
“Finishing fourth was getting very tiresome so we are on a mission,” said Upperton, whose victory marks the second of her World Cup career and solidifies her stance as Canada’s best-ever women’s bobsleigh pilot. “We have a new sled and new equipment that we’re playing with so I didn’t know what to expect today. We had two great starts and consistent runs so hopefully we can keep this going throughout the year.”
Upperton teamed up with the 23-year-old Ciochetti, who hails from Edmonton, to capture two bronze medals on the World Cup last season. Ciochetti will share brakeman duties for Upperton with Heather Moyse, of Summerside, P.E.I., who returns to the Canada 1 sled after taking a last season off to complete her university education.
